Citrus County Sheriff’s Office authorities are seeking the public’s help in identifying the person who burglarized Lecanto Middle School earlier on June 26, 2022.
A Lecanto man has been jailed for stealing fuel, two golf carts and tactical gear and firearms from a school resource officer from a Lecanto school building.
Nicholas Bruce Kaufman, 32, is allegedly responsible for three separate incidents reported at the Roger Weaver Lecanto Education Center since the end of the school year, according to arrest testimony from the Sheriff’s Office and Kaufman.
Sheriff’s Office representatives recently responded to Lecanto Middle School on Sunday, June 26, after the construction company that remodeled the school reported that it was missing power tools and an EZ-GO golf cart.
Delegates also found numerous power tools near gun safes used to store school resource officers’ ballistic helmets, bulletproof shields, bulletproof vests and AR-style rifles.According to Kaufman’s arrest report, the door to the safe was sawed open and its contents were missing.
Surveillance footage shows a masked man walking into the school building from the west and leaving Lecanto High School with a bottle of cleaning supplies.

Investigators followed the complex’s fence line looking for them as they headed south along the power line, over West Grover Cleveland Avenue, and south into a vacant lot near West Whippoorwill Street, where a steel shipping container sat alone in the middle of the property .
Authorities obtained a warrant to search the container, where the stolen EZ-GO golf cart was found.
Investigators continued to follow the track to an opening in the fence at the back of a homestead in the 3800 block of West Klett Path, where they also found a second shopping cart that matched the description of the shopping cart stolen in the June 14 Lecanto Middle School burglary. golf cart.
Authorities learned that Kaufman lived in the house, found him walking near West Wipwell Street and South Chicardi Avenue, and took him into custody.
According to his arrest report, Kaufman admitted to the school building three times, stealing golf carts, guns and equipment from school resource officers, and fuel by drilling holes in the fuel tanks of three school buses.
Deputies arrested Kaufman on June 29 on charges including armed burglary, firearm theft, possession of a bulletproof vest at the time of the crime, criminal mischief, two counts of burglary and two counts of theft between $750 and $5,000.
Kaufman was jailed on a total bond of $48,000, and the judge was unchanged during Kaufman’s first court appearance on June 30.July 20 is scheduled for Kaufman’s arraignment.
